William “Dave” Kirby, Sr.
Former Westwood resident William “Dave” Kirby, Sr. passed from this life peacefully, Thursday evening, July 14, 2011 at Kindred Hospital in Peoria, Ariz. Dave was 80 years old.

Born in Westville, Okla. March 30, 1931 to the late Dave Crockett and Bertha Alice (Frazier) Kirby he was raised and educated in Westville. In his late teens he moved west to settle in the Northeastern California lumber community of Westwood to help support his family. Dave, as he affectionately became known, went to work for the Red River Lumber Company and continued at the mill after its sale to Fruit Growers Lumber Company.

Drafted into the military Sept. 13, 1952 to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Dave was honored with a Purple Heart for wounds received while serving in Korea.

The family then relocated to Butte County and later Red Bluff before returning to Westwood in 1961 when Dave began — what became a 25-year career with the Collins family at their Chester, Calif. mill as a millwright. Health complications required him to take an early retirement.

An avid outdoorsman, Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing, doing leatherwork and was always available to help others with computer complications. He was a former member of the Westwood Snowmobile Club, served as a captain with the Lassen County Search and Rescue as well as being a longtime member of the Lumber and Industrial Workers Union Local 3074.
