Grizzlies earn first league win over the Spartans

Oct. 8, 2011 — As the nights get colder, those in Lassen County know that football season is heading into do or die as it nears post season play.
The Lassen High varsity football team held their own against the Red Bluff Spartans in the first Eastern Athletic League appearance and came away with a 24-14 win Friday, Oct. 7, at home.

Matt Damm started the running game for Lassen in the opening moments but after several offensive surges in the first quarter, the score remained 0-0.With 38 seconds left, Brian McDonald and his golden foot earned a field goal to put Lassen on the board first, 3-0.

Cameron Medico exploded in the second quarter with a 51-yard touchdown run after breaking several tackles and with less than three minutes to play, the Grizzlies led the Spartans 10-0.

The Lassen defense stood their ground in the game and kept the Spartans scoreless in the first half. As the clock was winding down, the Spartans managed to sneak through the defense and nearly had a touchdown run but Lassen’s Dalton North stopped the drive at the 29-yard line.

The third quarter kicked off with Lassen’s defense forcing the Spartans to punt on a fourth down and eight at the 48-yard line.
With less than five minutes to play, Lassen’s offense made an impressive drive down the field with Medico and Damm pushing through the Spartans defense thanks to the efforts of the offensive line.

The fourth quarter started with Lassen on a third down and eight and just six seconds in, Medico pushed through the defense to get another Grizzly touchdown after a 21-yard run to the endzone, allowing Lassen a 17-0 lead.

North stopped another possible touchdown run at the 5-yard line after the Spartans responded to the touchdown run.
The Spartans managed to make it into the endzone for the first time with 10:18 left in the game after Lassen’s defense was unable to stop the drive.

Morale was down on the sidelines and it wasn’t until 4:33 that Medico had a much needed pick-me-up run to give Lassen the confidence needed to win.
With three minutes left, Medico once again found a hole through the Spartans defense to get a quick touchdown for the Grizzlies.

With the score now 24-7, Red Bluff refused to give up and made a catch in the endzone yet it wasn’t enough and the game ended in the Grizzlies favor, 24-14.
