CHP Commissioner issues statement following tragic death of Bay Area officer

Sept. 7, 2012 — California Highway Patrol (CHP) Commissioner Joe Farrow issued a statement after learning that despite his courageous efforts to live, CHP OfficerKenyon M. Youngstrom, 37, had succumbed to his injuries sustained after being shot during a traffic stop the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Farrow said, “This is a very sad day for the CHP as well as all Californians. Officer Youngstrom was a valued member of the CHP family, a dedicated officer and soldier who gave his life serving the people of California. He now joins a distinguished group of heroes whose names are engraved upon the CHP Memorial Fountain and who will forever be remembered for their valiant sacrifice and service.

“On behalf of the men and women of the California Highway Patrol,I wish to thank all of those who have kept officer Youngstrom, his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers. We will be forever grateful for their continued support of the public, the public safety agencies and Good Samaritans who rendered their assistance to our officer at the scene, and the community and medical personnel following Tuesday’s tragic events. That support gives all of us strength during these moments of grief and mourning.”

According to chp.ca.gov, Youngstrom was working patrol in the Contra Costa area. Another officer radioed him and requested assistance with stopping a Jeep approaching his location. Youngstrom flagged the Jeep to the right shoulder and it came to a stop behind his patrol vehicle. Youngstrom approached the vehicle while the other officer parked his patrol vehicle right behind the rear of the Jeep.

According to the CHP, when Youngstrom contacted the driver, the driver opened fire, striking him. The other officer observed this and immediately fired on the driver of the Jeep, mortally wounding him.

Youngstrom succumbed from his injuries the next day. He is survived by his wife and four children.

So incredibly sad that this happened to such a terrific guy. He nor his family deserved this. I am so glad the "killer" was taken out. Kept him from hurting anyone else!!
