Police investigate Alturas shooting

Sept. 21, 2012 — The Record Searchlight in Redding reports Alturas police continue to investigate a Thursday afternoon shooting that left a man and woman dead and injured a 14-year-old boy.

Responding to a report of a shooting, an Alturas police officer saw Jim Sims III, 53, leaving the scene in a car. The officer gave chase, and Sims drove to a parking lot where he exited the vehicle and shot himself.

He was transported to Modoc Medical Center and then flown to Mercy Medical Center where he died.

Marilyn Sims, 51, was transported from the scene to Modoc Medical Center where she also died.

The 14-year old has not been identified, and his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Suicide is now the fourth leading cause if death in this country so murder-suicide is not too far behind. Would not surprise me if financial issues are the root cause, given the economy up there - they have no prison economy as a fall back. God bless them all.
