Investigation continues into Cheney Fire
Sept. 25, 2012 — The cause of the Thursday, Sept. 13 Cheney Fire remains under investigation but officials confirm it was human caused. According to Calfire Public Information Officer Leah Sandberg, an official report is expected to be complete at the end of this week.
The Cheney Fire broke out in the afternoon and forced the evacuation of residents living west of the water tank on Cheney Creek Road. It threatened 12 residences and 22 outbuildings.
The evacuations were lifted later that day. Calfire reported two injuries.
The fire burned 230 acres, according to Sandberg.
The Cheney Fire was the third fire near the Susanville area that week.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, fire crews responded to an incident behind Cady Springs that also burned behind several homes on Thumper Hill. According to Dave Junette, office of emergency services chief, no evacuations were ordered and resources responded fairly quickly and laid hose behind the structures.
The fire was contained around midnight and burned approximately seven acres, according to Junette.
Sandberg said that fire was investigated and the cause is undetermined.
Early the next morning, crews responded to a fire near Roxy Peconum Campground and Highway 36. It burned approximately five acres.
Sandberg said the cause of that fire remains under investigation.
