As the final two weekends of the Bizz Johnson bike shuttle approach, visitors and locals alike may want to consider taking the opportunity to enjoy the fall splendor along the trail.

At 8 a.m. on both Saturdays, Oct. 20 and 27, riders may catch the shuttle from the Historic Susanville Railroad Depot, located at 601 Richmond Road in Susanville, to Devil’s Corral or Westwood and then ride back.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) provides a truck and trailer to shuttle bikes from Susanville and Lassen Rural Bus transports hikers and bike riders as part of its regularly scheduled service between Susanville and Westwood. The shuttles allow people to arrange one-way trips on the trail without having to plan their own vehicle shuttles.

Shuttle reservations are required and available on Lassen Land andTrails Trust’s (LLTT) website at llttweb.org. Reservations must be received by 3 p.m. the Friday before the ride.  Regular bus fares apply — $2 to Devil’s Corral and $3 to Westwood — and an additional $3 for the bike shuttle. Exact change is required.

Additionally, Dan Brown, of Bicycle Bananas, said experienced riders could ride from the Depot to Westwood and back. He said he’d like to get a group of people together to do the long trip and really experience the trail in the fall.

For the roundtrip ride, Brown said to meet at the same time, days and place as the shuttle rides, and the group will head out together.

Remember to pack sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing layers, water, snacks and a camera. Also be advised to use caution in the unlighted tunnels.

For more information about the longer, out-and-back ride, call Brown at 250-4400.

For more information about the bike shuttle, visit the LLTT’s website or call 257-3252.
