Oct. 31, 2012 — Rapid technology changes may leave people with obsolete electronic waste sitting in their homes.

As a way to help people properly dispose of those E-waste items, C & S Waste Solutions of Lassen County will be holding two free drop off days. Events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at 471-825 Diane Dr. The event may end earlier if the boxes fill up before the scheduled ending time.

Proof of Lassen County residency is required and no commercial businesses will be accepted. Residents can bring up to five items per vehicle trip.

Accepted items will be:

•Computer systems and accessories (printer, mouse, speakers, scanner, keyboard, cables and modems).

•Stereo equipment, radios, tape players, CD players, headphones. •VCR/VHS, DVD players, camcorders.

•Fax machines, scanners and copiers

•Telephones, answering machines, cell phones, chargers and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

•Computer monitors

•Televisions

Lamps, batteries and light bulbs of any kind are prohibited.

According to Michelle Williams, C & S Waste Solutions compliance manager/executive assistant, batteries and light bulbs are considered hazardous materials and people can contact the Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority at 252-1273 to find out how to properly dispose of those items.
The E-waste event will be set up in the parking lot at the C & S Waste facility. People should look for the posted instructions when they arrive. Collected items will be hauled to an E-waste facility.

According to Williams, the event is a good way to dispose of E-waste without having to drive out to the (Bass Hill) Landfill or figure out what to do with it.

The event is an extra service for the community, even if people don’t have garbage collection services with C & S Waste.

The waste hauling company does allow five free curbside electronic waste collections per year for its customers.

If customers utilize the E-waste curbside collection, it is advised, but not mandatory, that they call C & S Waste staff at 252-1200 and give advanced notice.

According to Williams, it is nice to have advanced notice because drivers put the E-waste in a separate area of the trucks and the items have to be disposed of differently.
