Victims' rights group withdraws Burns' endorsement

Nov. 2 2012 — In an Oct. 30 letter, a victims’ rights group announced it no longer supports Lassen County District Attorney Robert Burns in the Lassen County Superior Court judge’s race.

Burns faces Susanville attorney Tony Mallery in the Tuesday, Nov. 6 general election.

Harriet Salarno, chair of Crime Victims United, a victim’s rights group headquartered in Auburn, Calif., said Burns violated the law in his handling of a case in which a 4-year-old Litchfield girl was allegedly raped by a teenaged family friend.

Salarno said her organization worked so hard to pass Marsy’s Law — a constitutional amendment that details a criminal victim’s bill of rights approved by the voters in 2008 — that it cannot tolerate district attorneys who do not follow the law.

Burns acknowledged one of his deputy district attorneys resolved “a sensitive juvenile sexual assault case without having first consulted the victim’s family. This is a plain violation of Marsy’s law. Regrettably, the crime victims’ organization chose to focus on the one case my deputy mishandled rather than the countless number of victims we have assisted through the criminal justice system over the 14 years I have served as district attorney … Nevertheless, it is my office. It is my responsibility ... In conclusion, I remain committed to Marsy’s Law and the protection of victims of crime as your district attorney and in the election of a new superior court judge.”

Nobody should tolerate a district attorney who does not follow the law. I know I do not. Make sure you VOTE!

The fact that the DA's office violated the rights of the victims they are supposed to represent is HUGE. It does not matter if it was just this once (which I doubt is the case). The fact that he has tried to downplay this injustice to the COMMUNITY, not just one family, is despicable!

Mike- I hate how people like you and your wife, are using this tragic situation, as a means to attack Bob's character in the social media. Stop pretending like you people actually care what has happened to this poor family...it belittles us all.

The family of this little girl has gone to far. Yes she was abused but there was no rape.(FACT) Mr Mallory has been having private meetings with them to ensure his seat.(FACT) There is more to this case than the fabricated lies that have been spun by the family. Do not believe everything in print!

The family has been clear about what happened, it was the organization that used the word rape, and the mother has clarified this on Facebook. However 'rape' is a closer definition of what actually happened than 'molested'. If someone forced what he did to her on you, I'm sure you would feel raped.

I am not saying what happened to this little girl was right in any way but the family and the case is obviously being used for political advancement. I truly sadden at the lengths people go to, to get ahead.

Furthermore, may what happened to this precious little innocent child at the hands of this horrible beast of a teenager (who I've no doubt has done it before and will surely do it again after the disgusting display of justice that was done) never happen to someone in your family.

It is so sad to see people say anything bad towards this family and what their little girl went through!!! Absolutely sick. Put yourselves in their shoes. How would you feel if this happened to your child!! You would fight for what is right just as this family is.

You should be ashamed of even thinking such a thing!!! This so called teenager has gotten away with an unthinkable act and should pay the price for what he did. Rape or not shouldn't make a damn difference!
