The body of an unidentified man was found in the mountains northeast of Eagle Lake.
Authorities were unable to determine the exact cause of death, but believed the man fatally injured himself while hunting alone. The man suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh and bled to death while trying to find help.
His body was discovered about two weeks after the incident.

Rumors of a movie being filmed throughout the county hit the community. The local newspaper reported seeing a roaming caravan of movie directors and actors traveling to and from different locations between Westwood and Susanville.
Reporters failed to confirm the rumors, but said if they were true, it would mark the first time the county’s scenery would be used as a movie backdrop.

Heavy rains and wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour caused two major truck accidents near Doyle on Highway 395. Both collisions were head-on accidents, but neither caused any serious injuries. In one of the accidents, a truckload of produce spilled onto the highway and took police two hours to pick up.

Construction of the Citizens Utilities building got under way on the outskirts of Susanville, near the airport. The $2.5 million complex was built on 8.2 acres and the Reno-based contracting firm said it planned to use many local businesses to assist with construction. With 129 employees, Citizens Utilities was the largest non-governmental employer and largest taxpayer in the county.

Following two hours of open comment from parents and educators, the Lassen High School Board of Trustees voted not to drastically change the structure of the high school’s sex education classes.

Lassen College women’s basketball team captured its second straight state championship after beating L.A. Harbor, Ventura and Allen Hancock in the final March 4-6 in Ventura. Ranked number one throughout the season, the Lady Cougars became only the second community college women’s basketball team to win back-to-back crowns.

Plans to renovate Susanville’s City Hall and a work plan for the Memorial Park Stream Restoration Project got the green light at the Susanville City Council’s March 6 meeting.
Newell Sorensen, Susanville’s city administrator, told the council the closing of the city’s observation well on the south side of city hall marked the completion for the preliminary groundwork necessary to begin the renovation of the historic building.
Sorensen asked the council to approve a notice of exemption and authorize him to begin bond negotiations for the $975,000 project.

Representatives of the Susanville School District and the Susanville Teachers Association have reached a tentative agreement on all outstanding contract issues. The agreement is a result of mediation prior to fact finding.
The membership of the Teachers Association ratified the agreement following a meeting held Thursday, March 6. Details of the agreement will be released to the district.

After 20 years of service to the city and the Susanville Police Department, chief Jeff Atkinson is ready for new endeavors.
At the Susanville City Council meeting Wednesday, March 7, Mayor Lino Callegari, on behalf of council members, presented a plaque and expressed his appreciation to Atkinson for his years of service.
