Herlong parents to discuss co-op preschool to replace Head Start program
June 13, 2013 — Herlong parents are banding together to create a preschool to replace the Head Start program that ended recently due to budget restraints.
In an attempt to fill the educational needs of their preschool-age children, a group of concerned parents has invited E. Kim Coontz, co- author of “Steps to Starting a Marketing Co-op,” to speak at the Herlong Resource Center at 1 p.m., Friday, June 14.
Coontz will discuss various ways to fundraise for and manage a co-op preschool. She also will help raise money for the project.
“We were trying to brainstorm and come up with ideas,” said Herlong parent Tasha Lee. “There are parents who work, and parents who need their children to be educated.”
The proposed co-op preschool may have a paid director, and volunteer parents would staff the school
Parents would be charged for their children to attend, but in some cases the fees may be waived thanks to contributions from donors.
Lee, a mother of three children — her youngest at a preschool-ready age — is passionate about the need for the preschool, and she plans to volunteer her time to teach.
“It was taken away from us,” Lee said of the Head Start preschool. “We need it (a preschool) in this area.”
