Jones, Singh make state
Lassen High School sophomores Warren Jones and Tyler Singh qualified for the California High School Wrestling Championships last weekend. At the Northern Section Championships in Redding, Jones captured the 105-pound title and Singh took a true second at 121 pounds.
It marks the first time two Lassen wrestlers advanced to the state meet since Willie Valentine and Matt Bates qualified in 1998. Valentine qualified for state three times.
"They peaked. We always seem to have kids peak at sections," Lassen coach Rudy Valentine said. "Warren is wrestling great right now and Tyler really stepped it up to make state.
"With those guys making state makes up for somewhat of a disappointing season. We're young and had our struggles, but the future looks bright."
Other Lassen wrestlers who wrestled at the section championships but did not place include Riley Urionaguena (171 pounds), Brett Cox (189) and Phillip Bush at heavyweight. Bush went 2-2.
The state championships will be held Friday-Saturday, March 1-2 in Stockton.
