School district to temporarily move elementary students to high school campus
July 25, 2013 – The presence of mold at Fletcher Walker Elementary will result in the temporary closure of the school site, Adele Emershaw, superintendent/ principal of the Westwood Unified School District, announced Wednesday, July 24.
As a result, all Fletcher Walker programs will be moved to the Westwood High School campus until all necessary remediation is completed.
The mold was uncovered through industrial hygienic testing commissioned by the school district earlier in the week. The district is taking immediate measures to further assess and, as necessary, remediate the site. The plan is to have an abatement team clean the building.
Having all students at the Westwood High School campus at the start of the 2013-2014 school year means space will be temporarily limited and tight but the action is deemed necessary to safeguard against any risk and exposure.
“Closing Fletcher Walker will be a heavy burden to our community and staff — heavy but necessary,” said Emershaw. “But the district will take no chances with the health and safety of students and staff; our mission is to deliver quality educational services in a safe learning environment. My experiences in nearly two decades involved with education in Westwood, and as superintendent since 2009, gives me great confidence that the Westwood community will pull together to get through this temporary challenge.”
Knowing parents and faculty are concerned about student safety and education, officials will be meeting with staff to provide updated information during the upcoming weeks. Also they will keep staff, parents and the community informed of the status of Fletcher Walker Elementary through updates on the district’s website, westwoodusd.org, information posted at Westwood High School and updates provided to local media. Parents are encouraged to regularly check one or more of these sources for the latest information on their child’s school.
The regular meeting of the board of trustees for the Westwood Unified School District is scheduled for today Wednesday, July 31 in the library at Westwood High School. Open session begins at 7 p.m.
