Cougars, FRC to face off Fri., Sat.
As you would expect from a freshman-laden group, Lassen College's baseball team takes a 5-9-2 record into Golden Valley Conference play this week. The Cougars dropped three games and tied one at the Modesto Tournament last weekend.
Lassen lost in the bottom of the 10th inning to Cosumnes River. Lassen's Dean Fore belted a solo-home run in the top of the inning. Cosumnes River answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.
After leading 8-3, the Cougars settled for a 8-8 tie against Diablo Valley. Lassen fell to College of San Mateo 10-4 and Modesto 6-3.
"This team is just scratching the surface right now. We're still learning," Lassen head coach Glen Yonan said. "We're getting better pitching and fielding, but we're just not putting it all together yet."
Lassen opens conference play against Feather River College Friday, March 1 in Quincy. The two teams square off in a noon doubleheader at Riverside Park in Susanville the following day.
The Cougars have beaten the Golden Eagles 16 times in 20 meetings, and took three of five games last year.
"It's going to be a close conference race this year," Yonan said. "Shasta and Butte are vastly improved, and I've heard College of the Redwoods and College of the Siskiyous are better. Feather River is going to have to earn it to repeat this year."
Lassen finished second in the GVC last season. The Cougars host Green River College (Ore.) Tuesday, March 5.
