Teen club looking for new members
Wednesday, Aug. 14 — Teens interested in serving their community and having fun with new friends are welcome to join the S Club — a youth service club sponsored by Soroptimist International for high school students interested in improving their community.
The club focuses on friendship, leadership, service and fun. In the S Club, teens have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and fulfill structured community service, while being mentored by members of the Susanville Soroptimist club.
“It’s a fun way to do community service,” said club advisor Carolyn Smith. “Some kids don’t want to be cheerleaders or class president, so this is another opportunity for them to get some leadership experience.”
In the past, S Club membership was limited to Lassen High School students but its now open to any local high school student.
The only requirement for membership is an interest in performing community service.
The club requires no dues.
Smith said the club already has some exciting programs lined up this year such as a scholarship workshop, a self-defense class and a leadership seminar.
The S Club meets on the first Friday of the month, usually during lunch break, to plan service projects and fundraisers such as food drive scavenger hunts, river cleanup walks, adopting other teens in need during the holidays, and cleaning and decorating the senior center for the holidays.
Smith is quick to point out community service of any kind is something teens can put on college and scholarship applications.
If you or someone you know would like to get involved with this group of community-minded teens, call Smith at 257-3290.
