College student drowns at Antelope Lake
Tuesday, Aug. 20 — A young man who recently moved to Susanville to attend Lassen Community College drowned at Antelope Lake on Sunday, Aug. 18.
According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the man was identified as Jared Lee Freeman, 20, of Los Angeles, Calif.
The sheriff’s office said in a press release, at this time, it does not appear alcohol or drugs played a role in the drowning.
According to the press release, at approximately 3:46 p.m. the dispatch center received a call from the United States Forest Service reporting a possible drowning victim at the Lunker Landing Day Use Area with CPR in progress.
The sheriff’s office said Freeman entered the water alone and swam out approximately 20 to 30 feet and began to yell for help. Two of his friends jumped into the water to assist him. Once they swam up to him, they believed he was fine and returned to shore.
Freeman began to yell for help again and slipped beneath the surface of the water.
Approximately 10 people jumped into the water to assist him. After about 10 minutes, the victim was located in approximately 10 feet of water and brought to shore where life saving efforts began.
Once on scene, a deputy assisted with CPR until South Lassen EMS and Mountain Life Flight arrived and took over life saving efforts. Resuscitation efforts failed and Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Indian Valley Fire Department and the Plumas County Search and Rescue also responded.
The case is currently under investigation. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family.
