Sept. 13 — Before the Lady Grizzlies volleyball team began practice Wednesday, Sept. 11, coach Julie Schmidt said her only expectation going into Thursday night’s home match against Burney High School was to win. It was a task easily accomplished by the Lady Grizzlies, who had no trouble taking down Burney, 3-0.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, the team traveled to Portola to take on the Lady Tigers, a team they beat for the first time last year. The outcome was much the same this year, with Lassen taking down the Lady Tigers, 3-0.
“In warm-up they had some big hitters out there … and they came out and they just brought their A game from the start and then all three games they played their game and they did so well,” Schmidt said.
She was particularly impressed with the performance of some of the juniors on the team, namely Heather Fortin, Taylor Spears and Lauren Cagle.
“Everyone did so good. My juniors stepped up,” she said.
In Thursday’s game against Burney, the Lady Grizzlies made another outstanding performance for their home crowd. They won the first game, 25-6, the second, 25-8, and the third, 25-5.
“I’m so excited for this year, to see how far they can go … (the girls) are all here for one reason, they all want to win and so they’re always fighting and always playing hard and that’s really what’s going to make us succeed this year,” Schmidt said.
With an overall record of 8-1, there is no doubt the Lady Grizzlies are at the start of what is sure to be a successful season.
