Schools launches bully prevention program
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 — With the help of a new program, local schools are attempting to recognize and stamp out bullying
With the help of the Lassen County Office of Education, teachers will be trained to recognize bullying and will learn ways about how to deal with it.
The “Steps to Respect” program works with administrators and all adults on an elementary school campus. The program was scientifically tested through a diverse range of schools in California that included low income and high-income institutions.
According to the Committee for Children website, students whose schools participated in the program were found less likely to engage in physical bullying when compared to schools that did not have the program.
At the Oct. 15, Janesville School Board meeting, Superintendent Zach Thurman introduced trustees to the program. He claimed that teachers would receive several hours of professional development training, and an overview night where staff would be trained on how to handle bullying situations.
According to the Committee for Children, “Once this ground work is laid, the classroom lessons can begin — and kids learn how to make friends, recognize feelings, and recognize, refuse and report bullying.”
According to Thurman, the Lassen County Office of Education is supplying the program, which will be funded through k-12 student mental health initiative.
