Vouchers still good on local buses
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 — Vouchers purchased for a subsidized taxi ride can still be used to catch a ride on a Lassen Rural Bus city route or a Dial-a-Ride bus.
According to Cynthia Raschein, Transportation Project Manager, the vouchers once sold to supplement seniors and disabled riders in the taxi program when it was owned by Barely Enterprises ceased to be offered 30 days after the company was sold.
Riders who qualified, meaning they were more than 60 years old or had a disability, could purchase up to 20 vouchers at a time for $1.75, then present the voucher to the taxi driver instead of paying full price. The taxi company would submit the vouchers to county transportation staff for a tax dollar subsidy for up to $8.10.
However, since a large number of the vouchers still exist and do not have an expiration date, according to Raschein, they may still be used to cover the cost of both the city route bus and the Dial-a-Ride bus.
“If (the vouchers) are laying around, they’re good,” said Raschein.
It is unknown how many unused vouchers still exist.
“If (people) qualified for the taxi program, they automatically qualify for the Dial-a-Ride,” said Raschein.
In order to book a ride on the dial-a-ride bus, riders must book the pick-up time appointment at least one day prior, with a maximum for a 14 day advanced notice. To learn more information, call 252-7433.
At this point, it is unclear whether the current owner of the taxi company, Pat Ridgeway, will make the company comply with Americans with Disabilities Act, which would potentially bring back the voucher program.
