Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 — Staff from Lassen County’s Department of Planning and Building Services will hold a pair of informational meetings next week in Herlong and Doyle to present information to South County residents regarding grant opportunities for community and economic development. A total of about $1.6 million in grant funding from the state of California has been allocated for the area and about $1.4 million remains available.
Newly elected District 5 Supervisor Tom Hammond, who represents the South County area, arranged the meetings to give his constituents a chance to learn about the programs first hand from the county staff that will administer them.
South County residents have complained their needs have been ignored, and the county’s failure to properly administer grant funding in the area became one of the issues in the recent recall campaign that put Hammond in office.
We commend Hammond for leading this proactive effort to get this grant funding in the hands of South County residents who qualify to improve their homes and to those in the South County business community who also may benefit from other grant opportunities.
Interested homeowners, residents and business people in the South County should attend one of these meetings and find out if these grant programs — basically low-interest loans — meet their needs. The grant funding is available, and these meetings should help residents decide if these programs are appropriate for them. The information presented also should help residents with the application process.
The first meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Doyle Senior Center located at 434-685 Doyle Loop. The second meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Fort Sage Family Resource Center located at 170 David S. Hall Avenue in Herlong.
