Three short, fat and jolly tourists came over the mountains on buckboards and made Susanville lively for a few hours. Messieurs Lowenburg, Vascellin and Berstein were all shorter than five feet and each weighed more than 200 pounds.

A live blackbird with clipped wings was placed on the floor before Harry Cain’s young wild cat the other day, and the little savage killed the bird and ripped it open in about 10 seconds.  

A fine lot of trout from the headwaters of the Dutch Hill ditch came into town Tuesday and sold like hotcakes at six pounds for a dollar.

Milt Cain is doing the public a service by blasting out the rocks in the road near the bridge over the Susan River.   

Long Valley Creek is a nasty piece of water to cross when it is high.   

The bottom is all quicksand and the stream rushes along like a millrace so that it is very hard for horses to keep their feet.

According to a study by “a celebrated Berlin physician,” a man who wanted to preserve his strength and health and live a long life ought to marry.   

The doctor compared the death rate for single and married men between the ages of 30 and 45 and found it 27 percent for single men but only 18 percent for married men. At age 60, there were 22 bachelors compared to 48 married men. At age 70, there were 11 bachelors compared to 27 married men. By age 90, there were only three bachelors compared to nine married men.
