According to a study by “a celebrated Berlin physician,” a man who wanted to preserve his strength and health and live a long life ought to marry.   

The doctor compared the death rate for single and married men between the ages of 30 and 45 and found it 27 percent for single men but only 18 percent for married men. At age 60, there were 22 bachelors compared to 48 married men. At age 70, there were 11 bachelors compared to 27 married men. By age 90, there were only three bachelors compared to nine married men.

The plank walk to Hall’s Addition is getting decidedly shaky, particularly where the water flows under it at the bridge.   

L. Knudson, chairman of the board of supervisors, didn’t come in on snowshoes this time. He reports that Antelope Grade is in good condition and Willow Creek is now blooming like a rose again. With an abundance of water, he predicted everyone will have good crops this year.

87 years ago   

If each county resident gave $500 for the relief of widows and orphans of World War I, Scott McArthur, of Standish, agreed to donate the same amount. It is not known how much money the relief drive generated.

 

Remember When for April 6, 2010

120 years ago   

A slight shock from an earthquake visited Susanville about 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning. It shook the tinware in Alexander’s store and shook the nerves of many residents.
