70 years ago
Nate Holmes arrested two residents of the Honey Lake Township for violating the ordinance prohibiting slot machines. One of the two residents appeared before Justice of the Peace N.V. Wemple and upon pleading guilty was fined $100 of which the defendant paid $50 on the spot and was given until May 1 to pay the balance. Holmes seized the slot machine and said he would not tolerate the devices in his township and would follow the instructions of the county authorities to clean them out as fast as they appeared.

We hear parties talking of making an attempt to get over the mountains to Oroville or Chico with teams. Better wait yet for about six weeks when there may be a possibility of making it.

Two dead bodies have been recovered by tolling miners in the tunnel land-slip at Buck’s Ranch, about 30 miles west of Quincy. One man has been brought alive, which leaves three still entombed.

The scene of the tragedy was the Grizzly Creek tunnel of the Feather River Power Company, beyond Buck’s Ranch. The trapped miners went to work at 4 p.m. last Saturday afternoon.

They came out at 9:30 in the evening for supper and an hour later went back to work. When the midnight-shift entered the workings the cave-in was discovered and from then until now crews of miners have been working ceaselessly and heroically to rescue their fellow workers.

Heavy rains are supposed to have been the cause of the cave-in.

Hoodlums — We challenge any town no larger than Susanville, in the state or in the world, to produce a grander set of hoodlums.    
It speaks well for our little town when visited by strangers, or at any other time, to see the sidewalk blocked by fifteen or twenty almost men, indulging in the most peace of our good citizens with their hideous noise, to which, there is no end or variety. It is a nuisance and should be abated. If said young men have no self-respect enough to desist from such annoying sports, there are others more advanced in age, occupying the position of parents, for whom they should have the proper respect.
