Gabe Dortson, of Susanville, caught a 13-pound largemouth bass from the waters of Honey Lake.

According to the local newspaper, Dortson was widely regarded as the most knowledgeable fisherman in the county.

In fact, the paper reported aspiring fishermen would pay him money to spend a day learning the secrets of luring in prize catches.

90 years ago

An illegal gambling joint was seized and two operators were arrested.

The men were apprehended when law enforcement officials dropped in during two card games involving about 20 men.

 

Remember When for March 12, 2013

90 years ago

The body of an unidentified man was found in the mountains northeast of Eagle Lake.

Authorities were unable to determine the exact cause of death, but believed the man fatally injured himself while hunting alone. The man suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh and bled to death while trying to find help.

His body was discovered about two weeks after the incident.

 

Remember When for March 5, 2013

90 years ago

Game warden F.P. Cady began circulating a petition against the sale of trout. The petition explained sales threatened to wipe out certain trout species in Northern California and alleged market salesmen who were threatening the extinction of certain species should be jailed and fined.

Cady captured one man on the banks of Silver Lake. He was reeling in more than 20 to 30 trout a day and packing them into his truck, according to Cady, so he could deliver them to markets in the Bay area.
