A group of inmates, working for state construction agencies, was this week making “a substantial start in clearing right-of-way grading” on a road joining Susanville with Red Bluff. Such improvements on the old road were the steppingstones to the birth of Highway 36.

120 years ago
One Eades, who was found guilty of battery, was fined $80 and sentenced to imprisonment until the fine was paid. He was released on Habeaus Corpeus due to the fact the judgment did not specify where he should be confined.

Hamann & Fischer, a San Francisco brewing company, began installing beer-making equipment at the long awaited Susanville Brewery. They told the public to expect several types of beer to be locally distributed, with the first variety to be on the shelves within the month.

 

Remember When for Aug. 16, 2011

115 years ago
All main street’s business owners took part in a combined effort to rid the street and storefronts of gravel, sand and trash. The unified front collected more than 500 pounds of debris and restored Susanville’s well-known reputation of being one of the prettiest towns in the mountains.
