From the Advocate: After numerous complaints about the smell of outdoor toilets and cesspools and reports of people dumping bath water, Donald P. Cady, attorney for the Susanville Sanitary District, issued a statement urging residents to conform to the district’s ordinance pertaining to plumbing and sewage connections.
The ordinance requires every home and business within the sewer district to have a complete plumbing system and hookup to sewers.

Eagle Lake, Messrs. Dow, Spalding and Harrison of Johnstonville have been navigating the waters of Eagle Lake somewhat this week. They boated a lot of lumber from its east to its west shore, but the winds drove them on two successive days upon Pelican Island where they were obliged each time to lay to until evening when the breezes abated.
Their presence upon this island caused the death of many hundreds of young pelicans, which being just hatched and died for want of a mother’s care.
These young bipeds can, however, be well spared for they are a terribly destructive animal to the fish of these waters.

The good people of this burg were awakened from their slumber the other night in the wee hours and entertained by the howling of a drunken lout for about two hours who claimed to be a bull-whacker extraordinaire. One of the cells in our jail would be the best and most proper place to sober and cool the ardor of his kind.

The comparative fire record as of May 10 pointed to a severe fire season for 1966, according to the state forester. Forest fires were 70 percent above the five-year average. The state forester issued instructions to the division of forestry offices to take positive law enforcement action on burning permit violations, debris-burn escapes and burning without a permit.
