We again dedicate ourselves to serving our community

Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 — As 2014 ends and 2015 begins, we celebrate the arrival of the New Year all across this great land of ours this week. Here at the Lassen County Times, we pause for a moment to rededicate ourselves to our readers, our advertisers, our community and the ethics of our profession.

With our newspaper, special publications and our website, we strive to be your first and best source for local news and opinions.

Of course, a successful newspaper depends upon the support of its advertisers, its readers and its community.

Yes, it’s time for a little ‘Auld Lang Syne’

Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 — Most everybody knows at least the first verse and chorus of that common New Year’s Eve anthem, “Auld Lang Syne” — based on an ancient folk melody with lyrics by Scottish poet Robert Burns first published in the 1780s. It’s become a staple all around the world as we welcome in the New Year and ceremoniously put the old one behind us with this song and maybe even a gentle kiss sometimes. It’s undoubtedly the best known and most enduring of the poet’s nearly 400 original songs.

Of course, we’ve Americanized the lyrics a little bit because that hard, way-back-in-the-back-of-your-throat Scottish brogue kind of sticks in our revolutionary New World craw. I mean, “And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught?” Really? (According to hymmsandcarolsofchristmas.com, it means, we’ll take a good drink or toast.)

We wish you a Merry Christmas

Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014 — The Christmas holiday is finally upon us — a holiday that seems to sneak up on us at the end of every year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

It should be a good Christmas here in Lassen County. A wide variety of events have sparked our holiday spirit — from the Magical Country Christmas to the Susanville Symphony’s annual concert, to celebrations in Westwood and Doyle and many parts in between. We’ve had all kinds of opportunities to share with those who are less fortunate to ensure they too have a happy holiday by contributing to any number of charitable organizations, and many of us have risen to the occasion and shared with those who have a need.

Reflections on the joy of the season

Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014 —On Christmas Eve there is an atmosphere of anticipation. It is stirred by the joy that fills our hearts when the date of the birth of a baby draws near. It is stirred by packages tucked under the tree that will soon be opened. It is stirred by the thought of Santa Claus eating the cookies left for him next to the stockings hung on the fireplace.

On Christmas Eve there is a feeling of expectation. We expect to interact with loved ones either in person or by telephone. We expect to be awakened by young children before dawn. We expect to receive gifts, at least one. We expect a special Christmas dinner.

Oh my, Christmas time is here again!

Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014 — Christmas is still 10 days away as I write this, but for all you Lassen County Times’ readers, the great holiday will arrive in only two days when this story publishes. Wow. Just two days until Christmas. Wow, and wow again.

One of my daughters may be coming to Susanville for the holiday, but we don’t have definite confirmation of that yet. We’ll just have to wait and see. Kids. The Christmas shopping is already done. And our presents, cards and nut breads are already in the mail, so that big stressor is behind us for this year, too. Whew.
