Remember that great, old Motown music?

Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015 — Long before I got my first guitar for Christmas in 1964, I’d discovered the style of music that later came to be known simply as Motown.

Of course, The Beatles recorded perhaps the quintessential version of Berry Gordy’s first hit song, “Money,” during the summer of 1963, several months before Beatlemania absolutely wrecked the planet. With passionate handclaps, double-tracked piano from producer George Martin, a throat-wrenching vocal from John Lennon (who also provided a scream or two for good measure) and a few that’s what I wants and hair-scattering falsetto oohs from Paul McCartney and George Harrison, it became the final track on side B of their second English album, “With The Beatles.”

Dr. King and America’s quest for equality

Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015 — As we prepare to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 19, racial tensions again rock our great land, so perhaps there is no better time to remember King’s commitment to both racial equality and nonviolence and his famous call to action.

As a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, King practiced nonviolent civil disobedience, but a gunman in Memphis, Tennessee assassinated him April 4, 1968.

Welcome our new elected officials

Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 — The voters have cast their ballots and Lassen County elected officials in the class of 2015 took the oath of office yesterday at the historic Lassen County Courthouse.

Michele Verderosa, Lassen County’s presiding Superior Court Judge, was expected to administer the oath of office to the county elected officials at noon Monday, Jan. 5 upstairs in the old courtroom at the Historic Lassen County Courthouse.

Who knows where the time goes?

Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 — Wow, the holidays have passed, and we’re off and running in a brand new year — 2015. It seems as if 2014 had just arrived, and now it’s already in the history books. I always thought time flies as we get older because we spend so much of our lives working for a living. Maybe I should long for the days before the Industrial Revolution when our lives were linked to the dirt rather than televisions, smart phones and computers. As I get older, I fear my understanding of time has abandoned me completely.
