Shouting out a thank you to our brave firefighters

Aug. 3, 2010 — Everybody remembers the first time — it’s human nature.

Way back in 1999 I enjoyed my first summer working at the newspaper and learning my way around Lassen County when I got my first glimpse of what seems to be an unfortunate and all too frequent occurrence in our part of the country — a raging wildfire. Growing up in the city, I had no real experience with our kind of fire.

Fair brings out the very best in Lassen County

July 27, 2010 — The Lassen County Fair is much more than just carnival rides and cotton candy — it’s a chance for Lassen County residents to celebrate our community and our way of life in Northeastern California.

Once again, it’s time to congratulate all the good people who organize the fair every year and say thank you for a job well done.

It hurts to lose a quality friend of the county

July 20, 2010 — Flags were flying half-staff last week across Lassen County and the state of California in remembrance of State Senator Dave Cox who died Tuesday, July 13.

Typically when one hears the word senator, thoughts head in the direction of politician and that equates with special interest groups and a self-serving agenda.

Working hard pays off

July 13, 2010 — When the city of Susanville Well #3, Cady Springs, stopped working, the Public Works Department wasted no time in getting the word out and asking all city residents to refrain from outside watering, which easily uses the most water.

The proactive approach and quick thinking enabled the Susanville Fire Department to be ready with enough water in case a fire began over the Fourth of July weekend when temperatures began to soar, food was barbecued outside, campers sat around campfires and fireworks were lit. The main reason for banning outside water usage for four days a week was to maintain a base level of water for fire protection. Fortunately, no major fire broke out over the holiday weekend.
