Supervisors need to focus on leadership and governance

Feb. 14, 2012 — Talk about full plates — just take a look at what’s before the Lassen County Board of Supervisors.

First and foremost, Larry Wosick sits dias right with his personal agenda and his desire to change county government into one that fits his vision.

The district 3 supervisor apparently is ready to jump onto any and all conflicts across the county and turn them into his own personal causes célèbre.

You won’t want to miss the symphony’s Red Violin concerts

Feb. 7, 2012 — Local music lovers have a rare opportunity to hear one of the very finest violins in the world this week as the Susanville Symphony presents virtuosa Elizabeth Pitcairn and her Red Mendelssohn Stradivari violin.

Both the violin and its player surely will be among the finest to ever appear with our homegrown symphony.

I can’t say I know old violins as well as I know old guitars, but instruments generally rise in value based on the materials used in their construction and skill of the craftsmen who build them.

Now’s the time to throw your hat into the ring

Feb. 7, 2012 — President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address Nov. 19, 1863, to mark the devotion of soldiers on both sides of a nation embroiled in a great civil war.

While Lincoln said his speech would soon be forgotten, it has become arguably one of the most well known presidential speeches of all time.

Despite the bloody turmoil of a nation divided, in his Gettysburg Address Lincoln evoked the everlasting notion of a government “of the people, by the people (and) for the people.”

Observation alone does not lead to human understanding

Feb. 7,  2012 — My daughter and son-in-law recently loaned me a movie called “Kitchen Stories.” They said it was kind of weird so I would probably like it. They were right.

Although the liner notes bill it as “hilarious,” that is probably an exaggeration. It is, however, a satiric poke at the whole idea of “neutral observation” underlying scientific studies and very funny indeed.

The movie was made in 2003, but takes place in the early ’50s or even a couple of years before.
