Patrick Shillito

Four years and 10 months ago, the Lassen County Times hired an ambitious 25-year-old boy named Patrick Shillito, barely removed from college, as wet behind the ears as a cub reporter possibly could be.

Since then, it’s been all downhill.

I’m still wet behind the ears, but at least now I know how to wash, rinse and repeat.

I had every intention of going to the Lassen versus Chico game in Chico on Friday, Sept. 2.

It was a gorgeous day and I actually could take the time away from the news desk and go. But, health issues and the anticipation of a winding road changed my plans at the last minute.

In retrospect, I wish I had gone to the game so I would have seen firsthand what occurred between the Lassen High School parents and students.

My parents had the assassination of  President John F. Kennedy, my grandparents had the attack on Pearl Harbor.

And like they won’t forget those days, I can’t imagine never remembering what happened that Tuesday morning or in the months that followed.

It has been 10 years since planes carrying Al Qaeda members on a suicide mission put fear in our hearts and changed our routine forever.
