Aug. 31, 2010 — I am not sure how many readers know that in some newspaper markets new reporters start out in the sports statistics department or writing obituaries. Neither are glamorous Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporting assignments, but they are two of the mostly widely read sections of any newspaper.

 

Do I still need the government to tell me what to do?

Aug. 24, 2010 — One of the fundamental differences between Republicans and Democrats is smaller or bigger government. It is also one of the issues the Tea Party Movement has raised the last couple of years — How much interference does an average American adult want from the U.S. government? For the most part those in the Tea Party Movement are conservatives and align themselves with the Republican Party, which for a while now has been the conservative party.

 

Dance for the pure joy of it and don't let anyone stop you

Aug. 17, 2010 — The night before the first National Dance Day someone gave me the advice that no one could stop me from dancing, but I didn’t listen to that person for two reasons. I let anger stop me from enjoying myself, and I woke up with one of my screaming, throbbing migraine headaches.   

  

School choice and knowing what is best for our children is tough

Aug. 10, 2010 — We are headed into the dog days of summer, but my mind is thinking it’s the fall season all because Lassen High School starts on Monday, Aug. 16. My thinking hasn’t changed on such an early start day — it’s just simply crazy. Of course, the old mantra is that the early date has to do with fall sports and the school denies it. I won’t argue that point except to say the first Grizzly home football is Friday, Aug. 28.

 

Shouting out a thank you to our brave firefighters

Aug. 3, 2010 — Everybody remembers the first time — it’s human nature.   

Way back in 1999 I enjoyed my first summer working at the newspaper and learning my way around Lassen County when I got my first glimpse of what seems to be an unfortunate and all too frequent occurrence in our part of the country — a raging wildfire. Growing up in the city, I had no real experience with our kind of fire.
