Summer's here!

June 22, 2010 — With the kids now out of school, and sunny weather finally here, it’s time to get out and enjoy all that Lassen County has to offer.

A quick look through the paper reveals a number of no-cost and low-cost options, many suitable for the whole family. There are choices for every taste — from dance recitals  to the upcoming Lassen County Fair.

Congratulations to the state and local winners

June 15, 2010 — The local elections incorporated in the California State Primary on Tuesday, June 8 are over and except for the Board of Supervisors certifying the ballots, the people of Susanville and Lassen County have chosen some new leaders to take us into to the second decade of the 21st Century.

Giving honor when it’s due

June 8, 2010 — It may seem like a simple thing and not the most glamorous way to recognize someone’s service to the community, but we agree with the Susanville City Council’s unanimous decision to rename Hospital Lane to Korver Lane.

Dr. Kenneth Korver is a name people quickly learn when they move to Susanville and if they read any health news in the Lassen County Times or the Westwood Pine Press. He is our Public Health Medical Director. Therefore, anything of concern facing the community such as E.coli breakouts, the H1N1 Flu scare, or other possible pandemics it is and has been Korver’s advice the emergency agencies, doctors, hospital, City Council and Board of Supervisors follow.

Commentary on what happened in Lassen County this past week

May 24, 2010 — “We do so much to honor our veterans who served during the Korean conflict, “and it is time we honor those who stayed and helped the soldiers, like my wife.”

Vern Hart, husband of Winnie, one of the original Rosie the Riveters, reminding everyone that Saturday, May 29, is Rosie the Riveter Day. Winnie will soon turn 84 and lives in  Eagle Lake, Calif.

Passion springs from both sides of marijuana issue

May 18, 2010 — Many people are weighing in on both sides of the marijuana debate ever since the Lassen County Board of Supervisors passed the 45-day moratoria on the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries and the cultivation of medical marijuana in the unincorporated areas of the county.
