Fire department suspends burn permits

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — As of July 1, the Susanville Fire Department will be suspending all burning in the city. Burning will resume Nov. 1 when the weather allows to lift the suspension.
    According to a press release from the fire department, looking at the forecast for the upcoming summer and given all variables, extreme conditions exist.
    Presently there exists in Susanville and surrounding areas, low humidity and extreme dry conditions that also exist throughout the region, and the necessity to preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the city of Susanville by taking all necessary measures for the prevention of fires.

Chester author announces two county book tour

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — Chester-raised author Jesse Goolsby is coming home — for a day or two, at least. His ongoing book tour includes stops in Susanville and Chester to promote his debut novel, “I’d Walk With My Friends If I Could Find Them.”
    The book was officially released June 2. Goolsby’s local appearances are scheduled for 1 p.m. July 2 at Margie’s Book Nook in Susanville and at 4 p.m. July 3 at Books and Beyond in Chester.
    Also an Air Force officer, Goolsby has an English degree from the United States Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in English and creative writing from the University of Tennessee.

Utility district hires general manager

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — The Lassen Municipal Utility District Board of Trustees approved a general manager contract for current assistant general manager Doug Smith, effective Jan. 1, 2016.
    During the Tuesday, June 23 board meeting, the board approved the contract, which would have Smith take over as general manager after current Bill Stewart’s contract ends Dec. 31.  
    The contract serves as a transition between Stewart and Smith for the general manager position.
    The matter was discussed in closed session and voted on in the following open session.

Supes consider building purchase at special meeting

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — The Lassen County Board of Supervisors will consider purchasing the former Bureau of Land Management building during a special meeting scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 1 at 707 Nevada St.  
    The purchase price is $1.3 million with escrow scheduled to close within 60 days of acceptance.
    The county will pay for all inspections and escrow and title costs will be shared.
    The supervisors will also consider approving appropriating $1.7 million to pay for real property acquisition costs including inspection, test and certificate of service reports and the acquisition, improvements to and equipping the facility.

Be fire safe this Independence Day

Many Susanville residents flock to commercial parking lots to use fireworks and celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.


Tuesday, June 30, 2015 — The Susanville Fire Department reminds residents of the firework restrictions in place in the city of Susanville for the Fourth of July holiday.
    A city ordinance regulates the use of fireworks within the Susanville city limits. Any use of fireworks is illegal in Lassen County.
