Herlong graduates present genius hour

Monday, July 6, 2015 — This year, Herlong High School did something different. Instead of doing the usual senior project, students decided to have a Genius Hour where all students did individual projects that further one of their passions.
The idea was inspired by Google’s Genius Hour where each employee gets a chance to work on a project for an hour during work.
While students did their projects, they had to answer three questions; One, what was your driving question? Two, what did you do to answer that question? Three, what did you learn?

Parade theme honors veterans

Monday, July 6, 2015 — The organizers of the 2015 Paul Bunyan Mountain and Blues Festival Parade on Saturday, July 11, have picked a theme: “Honoring our Vets Young and Old.”
Those participating in the parade are encouraged to decorate floats, cars, motorcycles and all entries in patriotic red, white and blue, said Diana DesFosses, one of the organizers.
It is a fitting theme, because Parade Grand Marshall Ken Sawyer served in the United States Marine Corps and is a Vietnam veteran.

Eagle Lake water levels may reach historic low

Sunday, July 5, 2015 — Based on records and data kept by one local resident, Eagle Lake’s water level will drop to a historic low this summer.
Doc Bateson measured the water level at 5,091.83 feet on June 20, which he said is down four inches from three weeks ago in May.
“If it continues at that rate, it will break that all-time record by Aug. 5,” he said.
Bateson, a board certified chiropractic orthopedic specialist, keeps a chart of the lake’s water levels dating back to 1890 on a wall in his practice.
