Luke Sheehy to be honored at Sunday’s National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service

Friday, Oct. 10, 2014 — Luke Sheehy, of Susanville, will be one of 107 fallen firefighters to be honored at the 2014 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, which is this Sunday, Oct. 12. The service begins at 10 a.m. (EDT) at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland and the event is open to the public. This annual tribute is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s U.S. Fire Administration. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend, including members of Congress, senior-level federal officials and other dignitaries, members of the fire service and families, friends and co-workers of the fallen firefighters.

NorCal 50th Wilderness Celebration this weekend in Red Bluff

Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 — All things wilderness will be celebrated this weekend at Tehama District Fairgrounds in Red Bluff.

“Wilderness Treasures Rendezvous — Celebrating 50 Golden Years,” a once-in-a-lifetime event focused on federally designated wilderness areas in Northern California, begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10 morning and will be open through the weekend.The event will open at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 and 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.It is scheduled to conclude at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Friday is Youth Day — providing an opportunity for area schools and students to not only learn about wilderness and conservation, but also to connect with professionals and career opportunities related to natural resource management.

Commission hosts Brown Act, ethics training

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 — The Lassen Local Agency Formation Commission invites local government officials and staff members to attend an ethics training held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 17 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Susanville. There is no charge to attend the event.

The law firm of Best, Best and Krieger and LAFCo sponsor the training with assistance from Cheryl Douglas, of the Lassen County personnel department. Josh Nelson will be the presenter.

The two-hour session will cover the Brown Act, the Public Records Act, conflicts of interest and general ethics principles. It also will satisfy the AB 1234 training requirement for government officials.

City launches use of force investigation

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 — The city of Susanville has hired an independent consultant to conduct an internal affairs investigation into an alleged use of force incident that occurred Sept. 14 at Banner Lassen Medical Center involving officers from both the Susanville Police Department and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

As part of its consent agenda, the council voted 3-0 to approve a not to exceed $15,000 contract awarded to Mark Siemens Consulting to conduct the investigation.

All aboard for 22nd annual Rails to Trails Festival

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 — Calling all vendors, chili cookers and handcar racers. Dust off your event tents and get ready for the 22nd annual Rails to Trails Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

The festival, presented by Lassen Land and Trails Trust, is extra special this year, featuring a Clash of the Champions Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest. Plus, the handcar races will be taking place on the Bizz Johnson Rail Trail. Its a great opportunity for your business team to have some fun and settle a rivalry the old-fashioned way.
