89-minute delays and 24/7 traffic control starting on Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation Project on Highway 299 in Shasta County

Caltrans will begin 24/7 traffic control along with removing large boulders at the Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation project.

The project’s scope includes constructing a catchment area and installing rockfall mitigation features on Highway 299 in Shasta County. The project is located west of Fall River Mills between the Pit River Falls and Canyon Vista Point and Pit No 1 Powerhouse Road.

Starting Monday, June 8, motorists should plan for up to 89-minute delays at the project location, Mondays through Thursdays between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. This schedule is anticipated to last a couple of weeks and is subject to change at any time.

The project will also go into 24/7 traffic control within the next few days. Motorists can plan for up to 13-minute delays under temporary traffic signal, outside of the days and times noted above for the large boulder excavation operations. The project area will be reduced to one lane long-term, with a width restriction of 14 feet for the traveled lane.

The project will construct an 8-ft wide catchment area adjacent to the roadway and install new rockfall mitigation drapery systems, improving public and worker safety. Some loose and unstable rock will be removed through scaling. A select area of large boulders will be removed by excavation.

Another select area of large boulders will be held in place by anchored mesh. Excavated material will be placed in a disposal site located within the project limits.

The existing roadway will be cold planed and overlayed with 0.1-ft Hot Mix Asphalt to restore the roadway after construction. Additional scope includes replacing or improving six culvert segments and installing new pavement markers, signs, delineators, and object markers.

Please avoid using the Pit River directly south of the project limits/along Highway 299 during the construction of this project.

The $13.2 million project includes 100 remaining working days, with all days requiring traffic control. The entire project is expected to be completed by November of 2026.
