A golden retriever from Reno, Nevada survived 72 days missing in the mountains, and this week, Nationwide has named him the winner of the Hambone Award, which recognizes the most unusual pet insurance claim of the year.
During a Christmas Day hike near Lake Tahoe, Milo Bear, pictured above, was startled by a sudden noise and darted up a nearby cross-country skiing trail, vanishing into the wilderness.
The search for Milo lasted 72 days until a shelter scanned his microchip. He wasn’t injured but was very skinny. After four days of veterinary care, he was reunited with his family.
The Hambone Award highlights unusual pet mishaps, but more importantly, it spotlights the care and support that helped each pet nominated make a full recovery. It was named after a dog who got stuck in a refrigerator and ate an entire ham, leaving nothing behind except for the bone.
More than 11,000 votes were cast for the nine finalists. Milo Bear took the spot as the “top dog.”
Two other pets were also recognized for their unbelievable, but all too relatable, misadventures.
