Court Reporter Position:
Under general direction, record and transcribe verbatim stenographic accounts of court proceedings; prepare certified transcripts of proceedings and performs other related work as may be required.
This position is distinguished from the Official Court Reporter position in that a Court Reporter – Intermittent provides supplemental support from time to time to the regular work force. There is no guarantee of minimum hours.
Important and Essential Duties include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:
- Report and transcribe verbatim accounts of court proceedings in accordance with established policies, procedures, statutes and standard
- Read back all or portion of the official court proceedings to courtroom participants upon instruction from the judge, including to jurors during deliberations.
- Prepare transcripts; review and certify transcripts of court proceedings.
- Prioritize preparation of transcripts, in order to meet legal deadlines.
- Maintain a variety or electronic and paper files of court proceedings.
- Provide transcripts on the request of the Court or parties.
- Perform basic research to ensure appropriate documentation of names, quotations and other information on transcripts.
- Obtain additional court reporter coverage when required
- Applicable laws relating to court reporting services.
- Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT).
- Legal, medical and other terminology used during court proceedings.
- Proper English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Courtroom procedure and protocol.
- Operate stenographic equipment
- Operate office equipment
- Make a verbatim record of court proceedings.
- Read back in open court and prepare transcripts of proceedings when required.
- Plan and organize work to meet deadlines.
- Respond timely and appropriately to inquiries and requests.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of court work.
- Schedule court reporter coverage for time off and additional court reporter needs, as necessary.
Judgment and Responsibility:
The person in this position works with a minimum of supervision and must be able to work independently with attention to detail, organization and meeting timelines.
Education and Experience:
- The equivalent of a high school education.
- Possession of a current and valid California Certified Shorthand Reporter license.
- Some professional court reporting experience, particularly in a court setting, is desirable.
- Real-time capability is desirable, but not required
- Ability to work in a standard office environment.
- Ability to work in a courtroom environment for long periods of time amidst some distractions.
- Ability to balance verbatim reporting work with preparation of transcripts and meet deadlines.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to perform repetitive work requiring finger dexterity for long periods of time.
- Possession of a valid California Certified Shorthand Reporter license with identification number.
- Provide and maintain own reporting and transcription equipment. Provide and pay for all supplies such as records and tapes and copy costs for transcripts.
- Work on transcripts is performed outside court employment as an independent contractor. Transcripts prepared on behalf of the Court are paid separately from court wages.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Criminal History and Background Check – Candidates are required to pass a fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice.
- Wages are negotiable within the salary range based on education and experience.
- Conditions of Employment – Successful completion of fingerprint and a criminal records background check is required and is a condition of employment. Felony and misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying for employment with the Court. The Court will assess the nature and gravity of the offense, the time elapsed since the offense was committed and the nature of the job duties to be performed.
- All employees of the court who operate a vehicle on court business must verify they possess a valid California Driver’s License and required levels of automobile insurance.
- Employment Eligibility – In accordance with the Immigration and Reform and Control Act of 1986, all persons hired after November 6, 1986 are required to present to the Court, at the time of appointment, original documents which show satisfactory proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or a legal authorization to work in the United States.
- The Court Reporter position is represented by Operating Engineers Local No. 3.

Court Clerk I or II position:
Under general direction of the Court Clerk Supervisor, examine and file legal documents; attend court sessions and take minutes; prepare minutes orders and other orders for judicial officers; swear juror and witnesses; collect and record payments for fines; consult with judges, attorneys and agencies; interact with the public in person at the public counter and over the telephone.
