Butte felled by Lady Cougars
On Wednesday, Feb. 12 the Lassen College Lady Cougars held a home contest against the number one ranked team in the Golden Valley Conference, Butte’s Lady Road Runners.
Before the women’s team came out to squeak out a 75-71 win over the visiting Lady Road Runners, the Lassen men’s team faced a stinging 94-44 loss at the hands of Butte.
The Lady Cougars started the first quarter against the Lady Road Runners hard and fast, as they led the visiting team by seven points early in the quarter.
But the Road Runners were able to focus on their shots and score a couple three-pointers to finish one point shy of the Lady Cougars, finishing 18-17.
In the second quarter the Lady Cougars came in reinvigorated with Lesieli Aonga at her post under the basket, and Keva New Holy’s shooting accuracy helped lead the Lady Cougars to lead 37-26 at the half.
In the third quarter the Lady Road Runners brought their game back starting with a nine point run with little resistance from the Lady Cougars at first.
But Dar’Juanah Harris helped push the Lady Cougars’ shooting in their third quarter rut keeping them relevant going into the final quarter as the Lady Road Runners took a 51-49 lead.
To start the fourth quarter, the Lady Grizzlies came out and battled against their visiting opponent with Ikela Green solidifying her status as a three-point shooter helping lead her team to a 26 point quarter. The Lady Road Runners played on to the very end though and attempted to answer off every rebound with a basket, but a few missed shots and the Lady Cougars’ communication led to a 75-71 victory.
The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Green who recorded 22 points, while Irish Winn and New Holy finished with 17 and 15 points respectively.
The Lady Cougars’ record now stands at 19-7 and 4-4 in the GVC.
The Lady Cougars hit the road Saturday, Feb. 15 where they took on the Shasta Knights in their second to last game in GVC play. Results were unavailable at press time, but look for the results in the Tuesday, Feb. 25 issue of the Lassen County Times.
