Caltrans issues Traffic Alert: Interstate 5 between Castella and Edgewood

Motorists are advised to plan for possible long traffic queues and delays on Interstate 5 between Castella and Edgewood (Shasta/Siskiyou counties) between late morning and mid-afternoon hours (Monday-Friday) due to multiple projects with lane closures in the area:

Castella to Central Dunsmuir – Emergency dig outs and paving are in effect during daytime hours to fix pavement damaged by inclement weather last winter. Motorists should plan for southbound lane closures, Monday-Friday during daytime hours, through the end of next week (July 21 and July 24-28).

Dunsmuir to Mount Shasta – Long term northbound lane/ramp closures, with continued traffic crossover, remain in effect on the Sac Gaps Combined Project.

Weed to Edgewood – Paving project for northbound/southbound No. 2 lanes is nearing completion. Motorists should plan lane closures in the area next week (Monday-Friday (July24-28) during daytime hours) for striping operations.

Note these project areas and possibilities of periods of longer delays. Motorists are advised to check QuickMap prior to travel to note current congestion and/or try to travel either early in the morning or later in the afternoon (Monday-Friday) through next week.

Travelers (especially with larger vehicles) are also reminded not to use non-highway routes to bypass construction and delays. Please drive slowly and carefully in and around work zones as any traffic incidents that occur will significantly add to delays. Thank you for your patience during construction and emergency repairs.
