College foundation announces Elliot Dow scholarship 2019 recipients

The Lassen College Foundation recently announced Jordayne Miller and Bryor Mitton, as the recipients of the 2019 Elliot Dow Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend Lassen Community College, current LCC students planning to transfer to a four-year university or LCC alumni currently at a four-year university. Preference is given to current or previous LCC students planning to pursue a four-year degree in agriculture.

“This endowment creates a permanent legacy in support of Lassen Community College and in memory of Elliot Dow,” said Dr. Marlon Hall, president and superintendent of Lassen Community College. “The scholarship’s selection committee is focused on choosing applicants that embody the qualities of Elliot. Jordayne and Bryor are overwhelmingly clear choices for this scholarship, and we are excited for Jordayne to continue her education at Montana State this fall and to  welcome  Bryor to campus this month.”

Miller is a 2017 graduate of Lassen Union High School. Since graduating from Lassen last spring, she has transferred to Montana State University to study agriculture and earn her teaching certificate. She plans to become a high school teacher and share her love of agriculture as well as teach animal science. She works as well as supervises at the Susanville Community Garden and also performs artificial insemination and embryo work on cattle.

Minton graduated from Upper Lake High School. He plans to pursue a career in Welding Technology and Ranch Agriculture Management and has already completed a year of welding classes at Mendocino College. While at Lassen, he will also compete for the rodeo team. He plans to transfer to the Chico State and earn a degree in agricultural business.

The Elliot Dow Memorial Fund was established in 2016 in memory of Dow, an LCC alumnus, as a perpetual fund. It was established by a donation from family and friends of Dow and builds on donations provided by Dow’s friends and family. Anyone wishing to promote student education in agriculture science and technology at Lassen College can donate to the fund.

Dow is remembered as someone who encouraged classmates to complete their studies and obtain a degree. His personal support was instrumental in motivating others when they became discouraged and questioned their ability to continue.
