Confirmed wolf kill reported in Lassen County

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirms a wolf kill on private land in Northern Lassen County.

According to a statement from the CDFW, a rancher discovered an injured calf March 16 in an area frequented by the Whaleback Wolf Pack. Siskiyou County personnel investigated the attack the next day and determined the tooth mark size and location on the carcass were consistent with a wolf attack.

Wolf DNA was also recovered from the bite wounds on the calf, and older wolf tracks were observed in the general area two days after the calf died.

According to the evidence, investigators determined the calf was injured by wolves sometime during the two nights before March 16.
