The Coppervale Ski Area opened its gates Saturday, March 3 for both new and veteran snow sport enthusiasts to enjoy.

Located off of Highway 36 between Susanville and Westwood, Coppervale is a hidden treasure in Lassen County; a treasure of which many skiers and snowboarders take full advantage.

“It has the small town vibe,” Norm Wilson, manager of Coppervale Ski Area, said. “It’s a community ski area. It’s not corporate. Everyone is really friendly.”

Coppervale has a Poma lift that carries skiers and snowboarders up to the summit, where they can take in the incredible view of the Goodrich Creek Valley below before taking one of eight ways down the mountain.

In addition to the many ways down the mountain, the ski area also has a rope tow for the less advanced snow sport enthusiasts looking for just enough of a hill to stabilize their skills and their confidence.

The terrain park at Coppervale allows opportunities for every skill level to enjoy the mountain.

Between March 3 and Tuesday, March 6, the area had already received more than 400 visitors who thoroughly enjoyed their experience on the mountain.

Wilson has proven extremely dedicated to the ski area and has expressed his desire for as many people to enjoy it as possible.

“I encourage everyone to come while we have snow. We never know how long it will last,” Wilson commented.

Even when the sun begins to fight the area’s desire to stay open, Wilson does what he can to support the trails on the mountain.

“We don’t have a snow machine,” said Wilson, “So our artificial snow is me transferring as much snow as I can from my house in my truck.”

As long as the snow sticks around, and more is added to the slopes with the upcoming storms, Coppervale intends to stay open with hours Tuesdays, Thursday, weekends and holidays.

Standard hours for the ski area are 1 to 4:30 p.m. during the weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Both full day and half day lift tickets are available during weekends and holidays with the half day ticket beginning at 12:30 p.m.
