Cougars baseball swings Oakland team into the bay

The Lassen College Cougars baseball team headed to Oakland, California Saturday, Feb. 8 where they played a preseason game against Laney College.

The Cougars’ bats were ablaze with the Cougars winning 15-3 over the Oakland home team putting the Cougars at 8-3 in the preseason.

The Cougars wasted no time in the first inning. Bases were loaded when sophomore Jesse Dunham flied the ball out to right field but was able to bring in Chase Cripps for a run in the first inning.

The Laney Eagles responded in the bottom of the second, picking up three runs taking a 3-1 lead over the Cougars. But those three runs would be all they would pick up.

Cripps entered the top of the fifth inning with a single then eventually making his way to third following a wild pitch. Then sophomore Tyler Rund hit the plate with a single bringing Cripps in for the Cougars’ second run with Laney still leading 3-2.

The seventh inning the Cougars bats picked up, and the team picked up an eight- run inning starting with Rund hitting a double bringing home Tradd Richardson who was sent to first after being hit by a pitch.

Freshman Rafael Gutierrez would bring in the final two runs of the seventh inning for the Cougars with a single to right field bringing home Richardson and Cripps putting the Cougars well ahead 10-3.

The top of the eighth inning was another successful one for the Cougars bats, with Springer being first up slamming a double out to left field, with Emilio Martinez being walked on four pitches.

Then sophomore and one of last year’s top players for the Cougars Austin Majorsky hit another double for a RBI bringing Springer home and placing Martinez on third.

The Cougars would go on to bring in four more runs before they would head into the final inning. Both teams would bring the ninth inning to a quick end with fast and accurate pitching.

Connor Irvine led the Cougars’ pitching efforts, pitching five innings, giving up three hits, three runs but allowing two strikeouts.

The Cougars headed to Kentfield, California to take on the College of Marin Thursday, Feb. 13. Results were unavailable at press time, but look for the results in the Tuesday, Feb. 25 issue of the Lassen County Times.
