Deceased inmate at FCI Herlong

Federal Correctional Institution Herlong employees found inmate David Valdez, 33, unresponsive about 7 p.m. Saturday, April 6.

According to a statement from the prison, responding employees initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services were requested while life-saving efforts continued. Valdez was subsequently pronounced deceased by outside medical personnel.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger.

Valdez was sentenced in the Western District of Texas to a 120-month sentence for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin. He had been in custody at FCI Herlong since Dec. 6, 2023.

FCI Herlong is a medium security facility.
