Despite canceled events, help us tell local stories

As you’re probably aware, events everywhere are being canceled or postponed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, which President Donald Trump recently declared a national emergency.

With Governor Gavin Newsom’s guidance to limit non-essential gatherings to no more than 250 people, and smaller events proceeding only if organizers can implement social distancing of six feet per person, many Americans are seeing not only national and state event cancellations, but ones here locally, as well.

Not only has the NBA canceled it’s season for at least 30 days, sports at Lassen Community College are suspended, and the Susanville and Westwood Little Leagues have suspended activities until at least April 6.

The Susanville Best of Broadway — which had about 110 cast members and many volunteers who spent months preparing for the annual show — has postponed the performances to a later unknown date.

The Lassen Humane Society, Knights of Columbus and others have canceled their corned beef and cabbage fundraisers for the time being.

The college has postponed its Zellamae Miles woman’s conference, and the Lassen County Office of Education has canceled various events like Third Grade History Day, Fourth Grade Day, Eighth Grade Day at LCC and the Fine Arts Festival.

And these are not the only affected events.

All these are out of an abundance of caution, the organizers note, but daily life is temporarily changing here.

As a local paper, our reporters love covering the events that highlight the athletic might of our teams, the wealth of talent in our performing arts community and the show of support at the myriad of fundraisers.

But without these events, it takes some of the heart out of our paper: So, to combat what may be a few weeks of uncertainty, we want to tell the stories of great people in our community.

Do you know someone who gives their all to help others, and deserves to be praised? Let us know. Do you know an athlete, of any age, whose heart bleeds the game? Allow us to share their passion. Do you know a person who has lived a remarkable life worthy of sharing? We want to tell that story.

And we’ll do it all over email or phone, if you wish.

Email any of our reporters, Sam, at [email protected], Makenzie, at [email protected], Glenda, at [email protected], Jake, at [email protected], our sports editor Brian, at [email protected], or call us at 257-5321.

With your help, we can keep the community in the Lassen County Times for a few weeks.
