Don’t forget your sweetie on Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day or St. Valentine’s Day or the Feast of St. Valentine arrives Thursday — and regardless of what you call it, it’s probably a day you will fail to remember and celebrate at your own peril.
Sure, we moderns don’t have to worry too much about the early Christian saints or the many martyrs and legends originally associated with the day because for more than half a millennia in our western world, Valentine’s Day celebrates our ever-changing vision of romantic love, etched into our hearts through the words of Chaucer and Shakespeare and Dunne.
But don’t despair — here in Susanville we have lots of options for wonderful and memorable Valentine’s Day.
For some a card, a bouquet of flowers and maybe a box of chocolates will do — and regardless of what else you might do, this is always a good place to start on Valentine’s Day.
If a bit of jewelry is appropriate, then stop by Sierra Jewelry on Main Street. They have many great items.
OK. Maybe you’re thinking about a little romantic getaway close to home — Diamond Mountain Casino offers Valentine’s Day specials — spa suites with a Jacuzzi, champagne, rose petals and chocolates on the pillow. Be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible.
Then again, a special dinner is always a good option on Valentine’s Day. The White House Restaurant offers a special prime rib or seafood pasta dinner with champagne and cheesecake. And the Pioneer Saloon at Lassen Ale Works offers a special dinner featuring a bacon-wrapped filet mignon topped with a portabella mushroom or a surf and turf with shrimp scampi or shrimp scampi with fettuccini as well as special desserts and cocktails. Reservations are requested. Call 257-7666.
Well, maybe you want to dine in instead? Papa Murphy’s Pizza offers a special heart-shaped pizza with premium pepperoni and three real cheeses as well as discounts on their regular menu (ah, but make sure you clip the coupon from the Lassen County Times).
For a more unusual and perhaps more practical gift, Lassen PC offers a new PC setup or tune-up for your old computer.
Then again, how about a spa manicure and pedicure from Hair Hunters? Make sure you make an appointment first.
If your special one is a book lover, visit Margie’s Book Nook. In addition to the newest best sellers and a large selection of used titles, they offer gift cards and lots of fabulous gifts under $10 as well as many popular board and card games.
Is your special one a movie lover? Check out the showings at Sierra and Uptown theatres.
And here’s a really great idea. If you can put off your celebration for just one day, you won’t want to miss the Lassen College Foundation Scholarship Benefit Concert and Dance held Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Lassen College Sports Complex featuring Louis Price, the former lead singer with The Temptations and The Drifters, and smooth jazz artist Kenney Polson. These are two world-class musicians, and all proceeds benefit scholarships for Lassen County students who attend LCC.
Yes, Valentine’s Day will be here tomorrow. Follow a few of these suggestions, and you’re sure to make your special someone feel very special indeed.
