Ernest Turner Wood

Ernest Turner Wood went to his heavenly home on May 22, 2023 at the age of 91. He passed peacefully at his residence in Sparks with his wife of nearly 59 years by his side.

He was born in Plumas County, California, to Martin and Nina Wood on January 21, 1932. Ernest joined the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. After being discharged, he returned to Portola, CA and worked in the logging industry. He married his wife, Joan, in August 1964. He then went to work at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, CA where he retired as Chief of Roads and Grounds in 1994. Throughout these years, Ernie volunteered as a Little League coach for the Red Sox and went on to coach Babe Ruth and the Herlong High School baseball team. Coaching brought him great joy, as well as televised sports, fishing and enjoying his yard with his faithful dogs.

He was preceded in death by his brother Edward Wood (1981) and sister Irene Moser (2022).

Ernie is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Dana (Frank) Noski, son Kevin (Marcie) Wood, grandchildren Emily Kane, Toni Kane and Trevor Wood, all of Sparks, NV. In addition, he is survived by four brothers and their families: Marty Wood (Reno, NV), Earl Wood (Eagle Point, OR), Stanley Wood (Las Vegas, NV) and William Wood (Reno, NV), as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a special great-nephew, Shayne Powell, of Sparks, NV.

Ernie spent most of his life in Lassen County, and even after moving to Sparks in 2020, he always considered Doyle his home. At his request there will be no service but a private scattering of ashes in the mountains he loved.

Rest peacefully beloved husband, father and grandfather. You will be missed.
