Escape Room fundraiser to benefit injured student

The idea of an Escape Room may be a decade or so old, but a round of the popular event is scheduled in our area with the proceeds to benefit a Lassen High School student whose life has been changed forever by an unfortunate ATV accident.

Lassen High School student and cadet James Robberson-Gibeau suffered a major spinal cord injury June 9 and is paralyzed from the waist down after being thrown from an ATV he was riding.

Local author VJ Hamlet sponsors the Friday the 13th-themed escape room fundraiser to be held at the Roxie Peconom Campground. She said the event will feature three-man teams that will compete at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

Teams may purchase tickets at Merry Morsels on Main Street in Susanville.

Hamlet said escape rooms have become quite popular where people get locked in a room and try to escape the room. No one will be locked in a room at the campground, but in this contest the teams will try to figure out who is the character Jason and save a camp counselor who has been kidnapped.

“They have two objectives,” Hamlet said. “Find the identity of the character Jason and set the camp counselor free.”

Ah, but the teammates will have to solve some puzzles in order to achieve those two objectives, and the teams will be competing against each other.

“We’ll have some characters involved and the helpless camp counselor they have to free,” Hamlet said. “What we’re trying to do is raise money for James and his family.”
