Freshmen Lady Grizzlies ready to establish lead
The Lassen High School freshman volleyball roster has been announced and the girls are already training in the three S’s: Serving, setting and spiking.
The Grizzlies will be rocking the court with 12 talented and hard-working young ladies: Neva Adams, No. 4, Kenzie Koehler, No. 5, Joycelyn Lewis, No. 6, Haylee Haas, No. 7, Desiree Bailey, No. 8, Jordan Smith, No. 9, Katelyn Ernaga, No. 11, Daniela Sanchez, No. 12, Jenny Siekierski, No. 13, Kennedy Wharton, No. 14, Taylore Somerville, No. 15 and Sierah Mathers, No. 17.
Head coach Vickie Schmidt has been coaching freshman volleyball for 24 years and has expressed eagerness to see what this year’s team has to offer.
“I’m anxious to get the season started to see how this group will play. These players all appear to be willing to work hard. They are uniting quite well as one body and will represent Lassen High School with true Lassen pride,” said Schmidt.
In order to provide the girls with the best experience on the court and give Lassen a team worth cheering for, Schmidt said the main focus in practices will be “the major components of the game: Passing, setting and hitting.”
Regarding some of the challenges facing this group, Schmidt admitted the main issue at the moment is teaching the rotation. Luckily, this challenge is one that can be easily overcome, thus giving the Lady Grizzlies the potential to become the best in the league.
Schmidt commented, “Fortunately, all the players seem to have a great attitude and are very coachable.”
In fact, regarding the outlook for the 2018 season as a whole, Schmidt said, “We appear to have a solid freshman team and look forward to a very successful season.”
Schmidt also said some of the girls who impressed her most at tryouts were Siekierski, Adams and Smith, so fans should be looking their way for how the young ladies play their role on the team.
The first game for the 2018 freshman team will be at North Valley Monday, Aug. 27.
The first league game for the young Lady Grizzlies is scheduled against the Yreka Miners on Sept. 18.
The first home game for Lassen will be against Central Valley Sept. 25.
