Halloween haunts Historic Uptown Thursday
It’s time to don those family costumes and allow Lassen County’s youth to unleash their spookier sides: Historic Uptown Susanville’s annual Safe and Sane Halloween is back from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.
Join an anticipated hundreds in Historic Uptown Susanville as Main Street is closed to through traffic and businesses and organizations hand out goodies to candy-seeking children.
“Join us for Lassen County’s safest trick or treating event for children,” HUSA President Melanie Westbrook said. “We expect hundreds of ghouls and goblins.”
This year, attendees at the annual event can expect a slightly different costume contest, a ghoulish coffin race and even a haunted house benefiting the local Holiday with a Hero event.
This year’s children’s and pet costume contests will be held from 4 to 4:30 p.m. at Pancera Plaza. Those looking to enter can show up between those times, get their picture taken and be in the running for the myriad of prizes of available.
Additionally, according to Westbrook, about eight teams have signed up for the Coffin Races where teams can decorate their coffins and race them down Main Street to earn bragging rights for the year. The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office has nabbed first place the previous two years. Interested racers can join the day of, Westbrook said. There are certain requirements for the coffins, which can be found at lassencountychamber.org.
Moreover, this year, the Susanville Police Explorers is hosting a spooky, not scary, haunted house at Sierra Desert Properties, located at 613 Main St. There is a small donation requested, and proceeds will benefit the annual Holiday with a Hero event in December where local youth in need have the opportunity to buy clothes and toys with the help of some local heroes.
Along with performances from JandJ Performing Arts and House of Dance, there will also be backdrops available at Safe and Sane allowing attendees to snap that perfect Halloween-themed shot.
